Stourbridge Town Station - A Dudley & West Midlands Gem!

The end of the Stourbridge Town Branch line goes to Stourbridge Town Station, after a ride of the Stourbridge Shuttle. It's next to the Stourbridge Interchange.

Where is Stourbridge Town Station?

Stourbridge Town Station is at Vauxhall Road, Stourbridge, West Midlands, DY8 1EX

In brief

The station opened in 1879 near the Town Centre, as it was thought that the existing station of Stourbridge Junction was too far away. The original station site is now occupied by the Stourbridge Bus Station (Stourbridge Interchange). The station almost closed in the 1960s Beeching axe, but the original station was demolished by 1979. A new station building was opened in 1994. The line now uses two Class 139 people mover-type cars, since 2009.

During WW1 the station was closed from 1915 to 1919, and was replaced by Midland Red buses, then during the General Strike of 1926, the bus service was reintroduced between the Junction and Town stations from the 7th May to 10th July 1926 to cover the withdrawn train services.

During the Beeching axe, the station and branch was listed for closure in 1964, but survived in 1965, although it lost it's parcels service and became unstaffed by July 1967.

The 1879 building survived mostly intact until it was demolished in February 1979, and the branch cut back by 70 yards, leaving room for a bus station.
