Where is Sandwell & Dudley Station?

Sandwell & Dudley Station is at Bromford Road, West Bromwich, West Midlands, B70 7JD. The station is about half way between Oldbury and West Bromwich.

 

In brief

A station opened at this site as Oldbury Station in 1852, one of two stations in the town. It was renamed to Sandwell & Dudley Station in May 1984, when the old station was demolished and rebuilt by British Rail with longer platforms, meaning it can handle long distance trains.  From Inter City to Virgin Trains and now Avanti West Coast services.

Sandwell & Dudley Station - details

A station was opened in Oldbury at Bromford Lane in 1852 as Oldbury and Bromford Lane Station.

There was another Oldbury Station in the town opened by the Great Western Railway, this was on a branch from Langley Green, it was only open from 1885 until 1915 (later the site of a bingo hall opposite the Sainsbury's supermarket).

British Rail demolished the old station and rebuilt it with longer platforms by May 1984, this meant that InterCity trains between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street could stop here (with anything from 9 to 11 carriages long).

There is no footbridge at the station, but there is a subway between the platforms.

From the subway, there is two ways out, one to McKean Road, the other to Bromford Road.

The station has a ticket office and ticket machine. Tickets can also now be purchased on the West Midlands Railway app.

There is usually two trains per hour from West Midlands Railway, using London Northwestern Railway trains (previously London Midland) on their line from Wolverhampton to Walsall via Birmingham New Street.

Avanti West Coast (previously Virgin Trains) normally stops here with one train per hour, on services from the north and south to London Euston.

Transport for Wales services (previously Ariva Trains Wales) stops here with one train per hour, coming from Wales towards Birmingham International.

Trains

Arriving at Sandwell & Dudley on London Midland 323205, during September 2016, this was on a service from Walsall to Wolverhampton via Birmingham New Street. These days successor company West Midlands Railway uses Class 350's from London Northwestern Railway (both companies are part of West Midlands Trains).

A Cross Country Class 220 Voyager passes Sandwell & Dudley during September 2016. They do not stop here, their last stop was Wolverhampton, and their next stop would be Birmingham New Street.

Avanti West Coast Pendolino 390 155 calls at Sandwell & Dudley during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in April 2023, on it's way to Milton Keynes via Birmingham New Street (line beyond to London Euston was closed for engineering works).

Sandwell & Dudley Interchange

Outside the station on Bromford Road is the Sandwell & Dudley Interchange. The sculpture is called The Peacock and was sculpted by Anuradha Patel.
