The station originally opened in 1884 when the Birmingham to Sutton Coldfield Line was extended to Lichfield by the former London and North Western Railway. In 1978 it became part of the Cross City Line, initially being the terminus, before it was extended to Lichfield City (later to Lichfield Trent Valley in 1988). There is 6 trains an hour Monday to Saturday, with two trains terminating at platform 3. While the other four trains continue to Lichfield Trent Valley. On Sunday's trains are every 30 minutes calling at all stations between Redditch and Lichfield Trent Valley. The line is operated by Class 323 Electric Multiple Units. As well as Four Oaks, the station is close to the Mere Green area of Sutton Coldfield.
